Welcome to Louth
In 1844, the 295-ft
spire of St James's Church, Louth, the finest late Gothic steeple in
England, was hit by lightning. When scaffolding was put up to repair it, a
local painter, William Brown, climbed up to paint the panorama that now
hangs in the Victorian town hall. It shows a Georgian town with orderly
streets and neat gardens.
Louth is recognisably
the same place today, getting on with life in the green and beautiful
Lincolnshire Wolds, little noticed by the rest of the world. This
perfect little market town has wonderful Georgian streets with many fine
buildings. Louth is a thriving and lively market town with a theatre, art deco cinema, a huge range of local
shops selling all manner of produce and plenty of restaurants and inns.
Look
closely at Louth and you will find the unexpected - six butchers, two
grocers, a cheese shop, an old fashioned tailors, a cobblers, a fish shop
and even a trophy shop.
To get a feel for the
town head for St. James church and climb the tower for a spectacular view
of the town. Visit the splendid little museum and then explore Louth to
find Tennysons wall, The site of the Lincolnshire Rising, Thomas Espins
Mausoleum, King Edward VI Grammar School (former pupils included Captain
John Smith founder of Virginia and Alfred Lord Tennyson). Meander along
the streets of Eastgate and Westgate and take in the Greenwich meridian
line and the Louth Art Trail and an Elizabethan pub.
Walking is
particularly popular and the annual walking festival in May - June is a
huge event. Walkers can enjoy level walks along the navigation canal
or more challenging walks into the Lincolnshire Wolds. Take the
gentle walk along the river at Hubbards Hills beauty spot - it never fails
to delight our guests no matter what the season.
Nearby is Cadwell
Park, one of the countries most challenging motor racing circuits. Just a
few miles away there's horse riding, gliding, golf, sand racing and
